Certification/Type Examination

Directive 2014/34/EU specifies when an ATEX certificate is required for a product, component, or protection system, as expressed by module B (Annex III) or module G (Annex IX).
A certificate is typically issued based on verification against the requirements of the applicable ATEX harmonized standards.

For certain ATEX categories (zones), the directive requires that the certification is carried out by a third party and that, for example, an EU Type Examination Certificate must be available.

Certificate for Category 1 and M1 (typical equipment for Zone 0 or Zone 20)

Certificate for Category 2 and M2 (typical equipment for Zone 1 or Zone 21

For zone 3 (i.e. application in zone 2 or 22) a third party certification is not required. However, it is a requirement always to make a technical dossier, which has to be stored by the manufacturer and form the basis of the declaration of conformity. Further, the material has to be Ex-marked. Standards, that form the basis of the assessment, must appear in the declaration of conformity.

A voluntary ATEX type certificate can be issued for category 3, for both gas and dust.

A "Unit Inspection" for Annex IX can be done for zone 3.

Equipment certified for zone 1 or 2 can be used as equipment for zone 3.

How can Dancert help you?

Certificates are issued by Dancert A/S, which is an impartial and independent certification body. Dancert is designated as notified body in Denmark for electrical and non-electrical equipment (Notified Body no. 1073 - ExNB). This means that Dancert can issue relevant ATEX certificates for material / equipment for use in areas with a risk of explosive atmospheres (Ex-areas).

Dancert is accredited by DANAK. The accreditation ensures that only people with significant insight into the ATEX requirements can carry out the evaluation.
